Flamingo & the river stories

Flamingo & the river stories

When the River of Stories is silenced by crocodile weed, Flamingo and the residents of this wondrous place, ‘not so very far from here’, must work together to save it. The solution is simple, but it requires commitment and, ultimately, teamwork. This magical story is a beautiful bedtime tale for any child, but also has some important messages.

Hidden within it are allegorical details and quiet lessons to engage and empower children of 5+ in their own self-care, particularly those taking medication on a daily basis. Flamingo’s story helps children grasp the complex concepts of why they need to take medicines and listen to their bodies, as well as understanding that they can ask for help and are not alone. Flamingo and the River of Stories was created to help children celebrate themselves and manage their conditions without being overly clinical or heavily explanatory.

We are our stories. Let’s keep your story-river flowing and make sure a medical issue does not become your whole story.

About Our Author

In her roles as an English teacher, journalist, mum and children’s book writer, Melissa uses stories to champion children, highlight the best of humanity and explore the marvels of the natural world.
She writes funny lyrical and issue-based picture book texts, with a particular focus on mental wellbeing, as well as adventurous young fiction.

Melissa recently returned to England after 20 years in Africa. Prior to her move Melissa split her time between Tanzania, Kenya and England, where she grew up. When she is not focused on the wonder of words, you’ll find her behind a very large camera lens somewhere in the wild or hanging out with family and friends.

About Our Illustrator

Susan’s formal vocation is an interior designer; however, her passion is sketching children’s illustrations. Which is why, in her spare time, you will find Susan in a café with a sketchbook, brainstorming ideas in the form of tiny human-like characters that are full of personality and intriguing emotion. Susan likes to work with traditional techniques, such as colour pencils, watercolours and acrylics. Susan’s inspiration comes from nature: trees, leaves, flowers, insects, and animals and the unique personalities she can inspire. Susan and her family reside in Canada, and it was the birth of her daughter, that marked the beginning of her collaboration in the world of children’s picture books.
